Angry Villarreal Fans Launch Petition to Block Thomas Partey’s Signing Amid Ongoing Rape Allegation

Hundreds of Villarreal fans have signed an online petition in a last-minute effort to block the club from signing former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey, who is currently facing multiple serious criminal charges.

The Ghanaian international is reportedly close to securing a move to the Spanish side, even as he remains on conditional bail following charges of raping two women. Villarreal are scheduled to play Arsenal—Partey’s former club—on Wednesday night.

The 32-year-old was charged shortly after his contract with Arsenal expired in June and made his first court appearance at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday. He faces five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.

According to the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), the charges involve two counts of rape against one woman, three against another, and a sexual assault allegation involving a third woman. The court heard that one of the alleged rapes took place at Partey’s home in Hertfordshire, while another incident allegedly occurred at a Spanish resort. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 2 at Crown Court.

News of Villarreal’s interest in signing Partey sparked public backlash, prompting the creation of a petition titled “Say NO to Thomas Partey at Villarreal.” The petition has garnered over 800 signatures as of the time of writing.

The petition states:
“Recently, reports have emerged that Villarreal CF are close to signing Thomas Partey, a player currently facing criminal charges including five counts of rape and one of sexual assault. A player accused and charged with such serious crimes should have no association with a club like Villarreal, which stands for values such as family and community.”

It continues:
“Signing Thomas Partey would be a betrayal—not only to the club’s loyal fans, who would be forced to support an alleged abuser—but also to survivors of sexual abuse around the world. It would send the message that fame and profit matter more than justice and ethics.”

The petition urges the club to reconsider any potential deal before it is finalized, citing the gravity of the charges and the impact on the club’s reputation.
