The Kano State Police Command has apprehended four suspects linked to the murder of Abdullahi Umar Hafizi, a 300-level Sociology student at Bayero University, Kano (BUK). The incident occurred in the Tsamiyar Kuturu area of Dorayi Karama, Gwale Local Government Area, around 11:00 p.m. on Monday, August 4, 2025.
According to police reports, the student was fatally stabbed by suspected phone snatchers.
In a statement, the command’s spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, confirmed the arrests, noting that they resulted from a coordinated operation involving officers from the Department of Operations, Dorayi Babba Division, Sharada Division, Kumbotso Division, and other tactical units.
The suspects, who reside in different parts of Dorayi Karama, were arrested following a 24-hour ultimatum issued by the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, PhD, to track down the culprits.
During the raid, police recovered several dangerous weapons, including cutlasses and a pair of scissors. The investigation is ongoing, with efforts underway to apprehend additional suspects who are still at large.
“The Kano State Police Command extends its condolences to the victim’s family and commends the officers for their professionalism and swift action,” the statement said. “We remain committed to maintaining public safety and ensuring that all those responsible are brought to justice.”
