The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a suspected quack doctor, identified as Sunday Okon Akpan, for allegedly carrying out an illegal abortion that led to the death of a 35-year-old woman, Blessing Sunday Etim.

Police spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Thursday, August 21, 2025. She explained that the suspect attempted to secretly dump the victim’s body in her room after she died during the procedure.

According to the police, Akpan was apprehended on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at about 9:30 a.m., after a report was lodged by the deceased’s mother. She said her daughter had gone to work at Full Life Medical Centre in Ikot Obio Odong village, Ibesikpo Asutan, but failed to return.

“Eyewitnesses reported that the victim’s employer, who identified himself as Dr. Sunday Okon Akpan, tried to sneak the body into her room. When confronted, he dropped the corpse and fled,” the statement read.

Detectives who arrived at the scene observed a premature fetus emerging from the victim’s body. Investigations revealed that the suspect, a resident of Afaha Offiong village in Nsit Ibom, was neither a licensed medical doctor nor a nurse but a community health practitioner.

The police further disclosed that Akpan, who owned and operated Full Life Medical Centre, allegedly used the facility to conduct illegal medical procedures and abortions. The health center has since been abandoned.

The deceased’s body has been deposited in a morgue for preservation and autopsy, while investigations continue.
