The Edo State Police Command has arrested a medical doctor over the death of 36-year-old Susan Omoye-Okporan, who passed away during a caesarean section at a private hospital in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area.
Police spokesperson, CSP Moses Yamu, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Friday, August 22, 2025, noting that detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“I can confirm the arrest of the doctor, and the command’s detectives are also investigating the matter,” he said.
According to reports, the doctor performed the procedure on August 2, 2025. Susan reportedly developed complications during the surgery and died shortly afterward, though her baby survived.
Her family accused the doctor of gross negligence, alleging carelessness during the operation. A family source told Punchthat they were prepared to pursue the case to the highest level.
“Performing a caesarean section is one of the easiest surgical operations due to technological advancement. I am sure the doctor was careless. The family is ready to take this case as far as possible,” the source said.
Findings at the police command headquarters in Benin revealed that the case had been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) more than two weeks ago.
An autopsy has since been conducted, with results now awaiting analysis by police medical experts to determine the next line of action.
