A court in Equatorial Guinea has convicted Ruslan Obiang Nsue, the 50-year-old son of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, for the unlawful sale of a national airline aircraft.
On Tuesday, August 26, the court ruled that Obiang Nsue—former director of Ceiba Intercontinental—must serve six years in prison unless he repays the airline approximately $255,000, along with damages and a state fine, according to Supreme Court press director Hilario Mitogo.
He was found guilty of selling a Ceiba-owned ATR 72-500 aircraft to a Spanish company and personally taking the proceeds. He had been under house arrest since 2023, ordered by his half-brother, Vice President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue.
The court cleared him of separate charges of embezzlement and abuse of office.
Obiang Nsue previously held the post of Secretary of State for Sports and Youth. His father, now 83, has ruled the oil-rich Central African country for more than forty years. Notably, in 2012, his half-brother and Vice President Obiang Mangue was given a suspended prison term and a $35 million fine by a French court for embezzling public funds.
